Real Talk with Andrea Yoch of Minnesota’s New Women’s Soccer League

This week on REAL Talk with Roshini, we got a sneak peek of Minnesota’s new team in town.

Andrea Yoch has a fresh take on the world’s favorite game: soccer. As co-founder and president of Minnesota’s inaugural franchise in the new, premiere pre-professional USL W League, Yoch has collaborated to create the first independent (not connected to a men’s team in the USL), women-led and community-owned women’s soccer team in the country.

Minnesota is one of eight founding teams in this new league which hopes to gain 30-40 teams before opening in May 2022. The goal is to help develop the next generation of female soccer talent by offering amateurs and college players more opportunity, gender equity, and career development.

Yoch said the club plans to open their community ownership drive sometime this fall. Community owners will help “answer questions big and small” and have a say in the team’s name, branding and colors.

Says Yoch, “We are really serious about the community being a part of this journey with us. We want to actually do the things that we’ve wanted to see happen. We want to use BIPOC vendors. We want to use female-owned businesses. We want to cast a wide net and not do the same things that have been done over and over again, to truly do something fresh.”
